Gambusia affinis, called "mosquito fish" are very valuable to our mosquito control program. They eat mosquito larvae as fast as they hatch from the eggs. Mosquito fish are furnished without charge to residents of the District for stocking ornamental ponds, unused swimming pools, and animal water troughs. They generally require no feeding and require little care.
Mosquito fish do not lay eggs, but give birth to live young. They breed throughout the summer and new broods are produced at about six week intervals. The young are about 1/4 inch in length when born are ready to begin feeding immediately on mosquito larvae. Mosquito fish grow rapidly, and reach a maximum length of about three inches.
The District will keep a summer stock of mosquitofish; and they will generally be available from May to October.
