Positive Mosquito Sample Detected in Lincoln

Increased risk of West Nile Virus prompts adult mosquito spraying in Lincoln.

ROSEVILLE, CA – The first West Nile Virus positive adult mosquito sample in Placer County this year was reported in northern Lincoln by the Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District today. A total of three WNV positive dead birds have also been reported in the District over the past two weeks.

Due to increased mosquito populations and the presence of West Nile Virus, the District is implementing the California Mosquito-Borne Disease Surveillance and Response Plan by increasing localized mosquito control efforts in the North Lincoln area. District Technicians will be re-inspecting and treating standing water sources to control immature mosquitoes, and conducting adult mosquito control operations in the North Lincoln area.

The District will be conducting truck-based spraying Monday August 3 morning in the following areas from 4:00am until 7:00am depending on weather conditions. For more information regarding spraying please call 1-888-768-2343 from 7:00am to 3:30pm Monday through Friday.

  • West from Joiner Parkway to Waverly Dr. /Teal Hollow between 1st Street and Nicolaus Rd.
  • East of Joiner Parkway to P street, between Shellback Dr. and 7th Street

Trucks will be applying Pyrenone® 25-5 (pyrethrin + PBO) by ultra low volume fog to target adult mosquitoes as they are flying.

District officials urge the public to take additional measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites especially during the hours around dawn and dusk. Wearing long sleeves and pants and using a mosquito repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus will help limit the risk of getting West Nile Virus.

The District also encourages the public to continue to report dead birds to the State Dead Bird Hotline at 1-877-968-2473 (1-877-WNV-BIRD). District staff will make every effort to pick up reported dead birds that are suitable for West Nile Virus testing.
