ROSEVILLE, Calif. – With the upcoming holiday weekend, the Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District encourages residents to have a safe and mosquito-free celebration.

The recent rain and upcoming warm weather is an ideal combination when it comes to mosquitoes. Add to that the high likelihood of people being out and about during peak mosquito activity, watching fireworks and barbecuing, folks have a high chance of being bitten by mosquitoes. According to the District, there are certain things that can be done to reduce this risk.

Draining or dumping out water that has accumulated in the past few days is one way to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs or hatching. Using an effective insect repellent is another way to keep mosquitoes at bay.

The District anticipates a much longer season this year, well into the fall. “With the possibility of mosquitoes being around much longer than usual, we encourage members of the public to start implementing good habits now before we see West Nile virus activity in Placer County,” says Joel Buettner, District General Manager.

For this weekend, as for the rest of the summer, the Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District recommends the 3 D’s of protection:

  • Defend yourself and your home by using an effective insect repellent, dressing protectively when outside, and making sure screens on doors and windows are in good condition.
  • Drain any standing water that may produce mosquitoes.
  • Contact the District for any additional help controlling mosquitoes around your home.
